A Web, Not a Ranking: Why the Kilroys Upended Their List

AMERICAN THEATRE: Once upon a time, there was a website update that theatre artists and workers would wait for each year, eager to see whose work would be included and whose wouldn’t make the cut. It wasn’t an award or a fellowship or a commission: It was the Kilroys List, a gathering of the best plays by unproduced or underproduced women, trans, and nonbinary playwrights. And it was, despite the anti-gatekeeping intentions of its founders, a powerful tool in the industry.

Things like this are always really fascinating, despite all the success and the notoriety that the list has gained the creators still decided to nix it in the hopes of returning to their original goal of uplifting artists. I find that awe-inspiring, that kind of thing is very rare especially now in this day and age people and companies are constantly ditching their morals for the ability to make a quick buck or get a few thousand more subscribers. Google’s motto used to be “Don’t be Evil” a motto that quickly became nothing more than a phrase that they pretended to care about. I really hope they stay the ones in charge because hopefully, they can keep this website as a place to uplift artists and not let it become something that goes against their mission again. I look forward to checking the website frequently to see what the new shows are that are underrepresented.
