‘Yellow Face,’ Starring Daniel Dae Kim, on Broadway in September

The Hollywood Reporter: Daniel Dae Kim will star in the Broadway premiere of David Henry Hwang’s Yellow Face next season. The play, which is inspired by real events, follows a playwright protesting the casting of white actors playing Asian roles in Miss Saigon, and then mistakenly casting a white actor as an Asian lead in his own play.

The premise of this play is super interesting: a broadway show about the controversy surrounding another broadway show. I’m really curious to see how it will turn out. Miss Saigon is such a problematic work of modern theater and the controversy surrounding it and how on earth the show got approved to run is something that has always been fascinating to me. The first time I ever heard of Miss Saigon was actually in an acting class when my teacher was defending yellowface and saying that Miss Saigon got too much hate for its casting and thus nobody was paying attention to the sustenance of the play. What’s ironic is that the sustenance of the play really doesn’t get much better with a white savior complex looming over the whole plot. It’s cool that yellowface has an audible adaptation, I think I’ll probably check it out. I love audio books.
