I saw the new Mean Girls movie over break and I was more than disappointed, I know the original wasn’t an artistic masterpiece, but it was iconic, funny, and likable. This movie was set now, making a lot of the humor and themes more cringe in my opinion. The costume designer Tom Broecker went for a modern mean girls, instead of the y2k looks the plastics and the rest of the school had, it was cyber micro trends of 2024. This was successful for what he was going for, yet a bit unrealistic. Most people in my highschool weren’t dressing in a tennis skirt, sheer top and platform boots everyday– but it is a movie. The Plastics were always ‘dolled up’ in the movie– their hair and makeup done perfectly, which does go into the theme of what the plastics stand for– uber fake girls who only value looks and social status. Overall I didn’t love the plastics look, but that also had to do with that the actors looked too old for the role, but Brooker portrayed them pretty well given the circumstances.

I was drawn to this article because I love the original Mean Girls and I saw the new one this past weekend and I also want to go into costume design. My first reaction from watching the movie is that it seemed too inspired by the trends of today. After reading the article, I see that the costume designer did take a lot of inspiration from social media platforms like Pinterest and TikTok and actual teens of today but when I was watching the movie, it felt like I was just looking at all the trends in the past couple years thrown onto people. I personally felt the most with Regina George. Her sense of style did not seem very cohesive to me. It looked like she had different aesthetics on different days and it didn’t seem to me like something the same person would wear. However, after reading the article I did enjoy learning about Easter eggs like how Karen wears a name chain backwards, and how the jingle bell dance costumes were inspired by the “Thank You, Next” video starring Ariana Grande, and I thought that was a really cool touch.

I watched the original movie, and LOVED it, and it was just one of the most iconic movies his teenage girl history, and even though I haven’t watched this movie yet(nor will I ever in the coming months), but I heard from my friends as well as online comments that this movie did not do the original justice, and that isn’t worth watching at all. Honestly, this article did not seem like a fun fact/secrets article, but just seemed like an interview broken up, and it seemed very repetitive. I liked how they referenced both the musical and the original, but I don’t feel like they took much from it, nor did the really “modernize” it. I feel like they just took modern outfits and put the characters in costumes that they would wear nowadays, but I don’t think it did the original much justice, and honestly, it was really hard for me to tell the characters apart based on the costumes, especially the plastics.

I read a similar article on the new Mean Girls Movie costumes last week, however I liked this article better. I loved the little tidbits and small details that were pointed out in this article that were not present in the other. I loved the nod to Grethchen's original patterned sweater in the socks of the new Gretchen. I also found it clever how instead of making a more obvious nod to the backward K, you would be hard-pressed to notice that the name necklace is backward; especially since most of the characters wear name necklaces. I think my favorite little fact in this article was how Regina's Halloween costumes kept updating throughout the three versions of the story. I love the idea of a bird of prey because in addition to the vulture imagery, it kinda reminds me of an angel which I think is interesting to think about and its connotations.
