Cygnet Theatre breaks ground on $43.5 million theater project at Liberty Station

The San Diego Union-Tribune: Construction officially began Tuesday morning on the $43.5 million Joan and Irwin Jacobs Performing Arts Center at Liberty Station, which — when completed in spring 2025 — will become the permanent home of Cygnet Theatre and the community’s only free-standing live performance venue.

As someone who lives in San Diego, a new project like this is incredibly important and exciting. In the last couple of years, it is clear that San Diego is doing more in more within the worlds of production and live entertainment. But a 43.5 million dollar project is no small project for a community like San Diego. I think the success of the project will be high because Liberty Station is so popular and it's also right by the water I can’t imagine why theatergoers wouldn't mind attending an event there. What I am most excited about is the opportunity to experience a large variety of theater because this new space will allow companies and theater groups who do not have a space a permanent place to perform and practice. Having one large proscenium theater and another large black box plus rehearsal spaces, shop spaces, and greenrooms will allow for so many young artists and unseen talent to practice their craft.
