As an avid lover of Josh Gad, I love seeing news about the success of Gutenberg. I feel like the financial side of broadway isn’t talked about a lot, so when I read an article like this it piques my interest. I am very excited for the cast album and intrigued by all the big names that are going to be in charge of recording it and mixing it and producing it. It is sad to see its twenty week run come to an end but even with just twenty weeks, it accomplished so much. It really was just two dudes with an idea and they made all the way to have a 20-week run. Overall, I am happy to see this show be financially successful and that it has pull the interest of the world enouhg to get a cast album and to break box office records at the Jones theater.

While disappointed that I wasn’t able to see Gutenberg before its closing, I am excited that a Broadway show had such success. In my opinion, Gutenberg did something very smart in its “surprise producer” ending. It reminds me of what Taylor Swift did with the surprise song creating an urge for the audience to see the show as soon as possible out of fear of missing on a favorite. This phenomenon isn’t sustainable long term, but works well for a limited engagement like Gutenberg. Alongside its star-studded (cmu alum :)) cast, Gutenberg was destined for success. I’m curious to see if Gutenberg will follow the traditional Broadway pattern of tour, regional, licensing, etc given its reliance on the big names for success. I see it better performing as a widely marketed proshot, but honestly don’t know all the legal and commercial implications with that. Overall, I’m glad a Broadway show is doing so well again, and am excited to hear the cast recording!
