Meet Heisler, TV's Favorite Beer That Doesn't Even Exist

VinePair: If you’ve ever seen “New Girl,” you’re likely familiar with True American. The fictional drinking game — which is as patriotic as it is confusing — is a favorite among the sitcom’s characters, who play it sporadically throughout the show’s seven seasons. The aftermath usually involves horrific hangovers, divulged secrets, and dozens of empty beer cans scattered across the roommates’ loft.

I had never really thought about the fact that many shows and films include alcohol that is not always branded. I also did not think that it would even be needed to make a whole fake brand around alcohol, but I guess it really does help to make everything feel more real, especially when the beverage needs to be poured on camera. Heisler Beer is definitely an amazing invention, and I am so glad that they were able to patent their idea on making a fake alcohol brand. It is clearly a brilliant idea, especially since it is so often needed on many sets. It’s so interesting to think about the fact that real alcohol brands specifically chose to make sure that their branded items are only associated with positive events in media, even if it is part of a TV show or film. I would have never thought of that ever being an issue, but it makes perfect sense. I also find it so silly that people have even come up with the recipe for Heisler Beer. It almost makes me want to try it or even get my hands on an exclusive Heisler Beer bottle.

This is hilarious! I am someone who has watched new girl all the way through multiple times and I would have never thought that the beer they drink is not a real brand and I think that is one funny but two kinda smart. In TV it is obvious when a character is using a laptop that looks like a mac but instead of having the apple logo on the back it is just blank. Or when makeup products are being used and there are no labels. All of those things caught my attention but this never did. That is why I think it is genius to make up a brand and slap it on the bottle. Why would a watcher ever stop to think that it's fake. And if they happen to notice it is a funny little easter egg. I will definitely go back and look at the scenes where they play true american and definitely think about this article.

I was not familiar with Heisler beers before this, but I love the fact that there is a fake beer company that is used across a large number of shows and movies. It definitely makes sense that some alcohol companies would be unwilling to have their products displayed on screen, and now that I think about it I can't think of many film scenes with real-life liquor companies. It feels almost like an easter egg across a large number of shows that they all drink the same completely fake beer. Side note: the nickname "the Bud Light of Fake Beers” absolutely cracked me up. I can't imagine there is all too much competition in the fake beer market, but hey, I would love to be proved wrong. Either way, the nickname is awesome and is fitting for such a historic and widespread brand like Heisler that has had such a far-reaching influence.
