I was very surprised will reading this article that 2 of the top 5 skills that this article says you need to get hired in the modern era were hard skills. Most of the time, people who are giving advice about resumes and applying to jobs put a lot of stress on soft skills. While three of the skills on this list are soft skills, I came into this article expecting all five to be. The 2 hard skills, data processing and sustainability literacy, were also not the ones I would expect to see. It makes sense as most businesses around the world are moving to be green and to decrease their cardon emissions. The soft skills that are listed are essentially the ones that everyone says are the most important, adaptability, creativity, and problem-solving. While I knew most of the information in this article before reading it, it is a resource to consider when applying for jobs.

In today's “post covid” world careers and professional standards are changing and adapting. I believe this article reflects the changes in skills and characteristics that need to be made in the professional world. Although the article is not necessarily theater based every skill mentioned in this article is transferable and applicable to our industry. I worked in summer stock as a company management intern this summer and can see how synthesizing information and coming up with new solutions on your toes is something that hiring managers are looking for. I feel that another thing to mention in such a people focused industry is adaptability and creative problem solving when it comes to covid. As of now, even though we are no longer in a state of emergency, thinking about how to adapt to a company member's absence is crucial in today's world. I am curious to see how desirable skills change over the coming years as our world changes.

I completely agree with what this article says, although it seemed vaguely similar to reading a daily horoscope in some way. I do agree that job candidates today need to meet all five of the qualities listed, but the only one that truly applies the most in this generation of workers is data literacy and analytics. I think that in any of the past generation all of these are quality needed for good workers, which is why I say that it is similar to reading a horoscope. This article appears to be aimed specifically at workers or candidates in 2024, but really all of these qualities can be found in the best worker from seemingly any year or generation. I do think that creativity and adaptability to a certain extent are newer requirements. You could look back at the workers during both worlds wars and make an argument that they were not required to be creative in order to be good, definitely when looking at machinists and factory workers. That being said, I do think that the best workers in any generation do have all five of these qualities and know when to put them to use at the best moments. I would like to think I possess some of these qualities, but obviously it is about continually working towards perfection in these areas.

In today's world everything is constantly adapting and the skills required to succeed seem to always be fluctuating. Unfortunately, many people of our generation seem to not want to do hard work or adapt. They want to do one thing and never have to do anything more than the minimum. However sometimes it is required, especially today. The first thing the article says is required is adaptability. I would say that I believe that is the most important skill to have, to be able to recognize a problem, analyze and adapt. Especially in our line of work, being adaptable is crucial to success. The article also talks about being able to read data and understanding sustainability as important skills, which I would agree with. In theatre sustainability is not always thought about, but it is being more and more addressed, meaning that up and coming job applicants need to have a good understanding of how to make theatre greener. Additionally the article also states that problem solving and creativity are important, and that could not be more true. That is needed in any industry I can think of, overall I think the article has a lot of good points and offers an interesting perspective on today's job market.

I understand that a mixture of hard and soft skills do help make you the ideal candidate for any company that is hiring, however I feel like these hard skills were chosen a bit at random, and then an explanation was made for why they were there afterwards. data analytics I get a bit more, well they may not be super relevant to us as theater makers, as a stage manager I can see how the skills would translate. However, with things like sustainability, I think it is important, I think it is worth acknowledging and worth having people who have a background in such things, but I don't know if I would put it necessarily on my top list of hireable skills. I definitely agree that things like adaptability and creativity are extremely vital in any job market. You can plan for all of the solutions you like, and you can find the perfect person for these scenarios, but without adaptability, they'll never be able to adapt to the imperfect scenarios that life brings forth.
