My first reaction to reading this article is that the work that this museum is doing with its space shuttle is nothing short of incredible. I had previously seen an article about the fuel tank being put in place, but this is the first time I had read about the specific plans to raise the orbiter. I was privileged to see Discovery several times in the Smithsonian, which was impressive as is. I cannot imagine how impressive it will be to stand under a 40-story tall fully stacked space shuttle. I do think the engineering challenges of this exhibit are impressive. The first thing that struck me was that they have to work with priceless artifacts outside because they are so big that the only option is to build the building around them. One approach they took to solving this problem was to shrink-wrap the entire space shuttle. I also find it interesting that they are building an entire building just to show off this artifact. I wonder how they are planning on lighting the shuttle.
