Skil PWRCore 20 18-Gauge Brad Nailer Review

Pro Tool Reviews: Over the last few years, we’ve seen a number of excellent tools join the Skil PWRCore 20 lineup, but today we have something completely brand new from the company. The Skil 18-gauge brad nailer fills an important gap in the ranks, but I want to know how this first-generation tool compares to the competition.

Did I expect to spend my Saturday evening reading a review of an 18-gauge brad nailer? Not necessarily. But hey, what better is there to do in Pittsburgh on a Saturday night? I clicked on this article accidentally, but then started reading it, at first not planning to read the entire thing. What started as an accident became a fascinating dive into the world of 18-gauge brad nailers and an introduction to Skil, and their creation of a product in its first generation. I've never researched or thought too much about 18-gauge brad nailer design (I couldn't say the same for 16-gauge ones though, there's some fascinating stuff going on in that market). I will say, though, it really seems as though Skil nailed it (get it?) with this one. They seem to have mastered ergonomics and ease of use through handle design, a thin nose, and button placement down to a science. Being able to charge devices from the battery is just an added plus to an already near-perfect design. No discussion of a tool is complete without mentioning its drawbacks, for which this tool has impressively few. They have a slight firing delay, but this is something that any competent user can work around, and I wouldn't be surprised if Skil can fix this in later iterations of the product. When shopping for 18-gauge brad nailers in the future, I will undoubtedly be turning to Skil. Although a tool too young to be critically acclaimed, the quote "topcats often begin as underdogs" (Bernard Meltzer) will without a doubt hold true.
