Dear Evan Hansen Turns to TikTok to Find Stars for U.K. Tour

Playbill: The upcoming U.K. tour of the Olivier- and Tony-winning musical Dear Evan Hansen is collaborating with TikTok to find the next generation of talent for the upcoming production. As previously reported, Nottingham Playhouse Artistic Director Adam Penford will direct the new staging, which will play the Nottingham venue September 9–28 prior to embarking on a U.K. tour.

This seems to be a quite shocking way to audition for a role on Broadway. I would have ever thought that theaters as big as the Nottingham Playhouse would use a social media platform, like TikTok, for video applications and auditions. This idea kind of reminds me of another article that I commented on this week that discussed Dolly Parton’s Broadway musical and how they were going to look for performers “through different means.” I wonder if this is what they meant. Using a platform like TikTok can be helpful to find people who would not otherwise get noticed because anyone can get famous from posting videos on TikTok. Social media does kind of give an equal playing field sometimes when it comes to people auditioning for roles. I am interested to see what performers Nottingham Playhouse ends up hiring for their production of Dear Evan Hansen. I wonder if they will end up to be performers who are already well-known on social media and have a large following.
