Beefed-up Biscuit Joints
Fine Homebuilding: Over the last few months I have had the chance to work with the Lamello Zeta P2 and two of its compatible connectors, the Tenso and the Clamex. Let’s start by saying that this is not an ordinary biscuit joiner and these connectors are not your typical biscuits.

These "biscuits", if you can even really call them that, are very interesting and I have never seen or used anything quite like these. Biscuits are very useful for gluing up edges, but it is only to add precision to alignment and maybe a bit of structural support. The first of these biscuits, the Tenso, is very similar to a standard wooden biscuit. The second, Clamex, is a very interesting piece that is closer to a coffin lock rather than a biscuit, although it does have the same alignment affect just with the added choice of disconnecting pieces. At first glance, I had trouble trying to figure out in what areas of finer woodworking that the Clamex would be a useful piece. I continued thinking, though, and started to realize that this could lead to more intricate assembly choices. You could build a catch-all tray, for example, and have the options to expand or contract the size based on what all was going to be put in it. This could lead to larger scale construction that could have separate configurations so that it could be sold on a much larger scale to many people with different needs. These are very cool pieces that I will keep in mind for my own woodworking going forward.
