For Hailey Verbonac, details make Indigenous design

Intermission: Hailey Verbonac is a trailblazing designer — and budding rap lyricist. At least that’s the case with regard to his work on Space Girl, a new play by Frances Koncan that Prairie Theatre Exchange is presenting digitally following a live run in 2023. Koncan’s play follows Lyra — the titular space girl — as she travels from the moon to Earth and back again, on a zany quest to charge her phone and revive her waning influencer status.

As someone quite interested in lighting, this article was enlightening to read. I appreciated how Verbonac described the similarities, but also stark differences between painting and watercolor. Stating, “Each moment, each second stage, each light cue is, in my mind, a painting,” really reminded me of how I view art. I’ve always described my lighting as choreography, as I’m quite interested in the movement of lighting, however, the painting technique Verbonac describes is one I hope to consider in refining my highlights and shadow techniques. His emphasis on the compositionally important parts of lighting really proves how necessary a general understanding of art is for any theatre design career. It reminded me of why the Carnegie Mellon curriculum exists in the way that it does. Canadian theatre is not something I’m super familiar with and this article made me more curious about it; while existing in the same general climate and language as US theatre, so many cultural differences in what groups make theater and how indigenous art exists is different. I have family that work in the Canadian arts sector so would love to explore this further!
