I am very passionate about accessibility within theatre and I look forward to NYC Broadway Week because it is a time when Broadway becomes, although very little, still slightly more accessible to lower-income audiences. I find that no matter how revolutionary something is, you are almost shouting into an echo chamber when you bring something to Broadway. We had a great conversation with this in Anti-Racist and Equitable Practices in Theatre class last semester when one of the cast members of A Strange Loop joined us. As the Broadway industry caters to rich white producers it is a naturally corrupt industry with everything needing to be PG enough for the people funding the show, and ultimately the audience, which tends to be upper class. However, that is not to say that events like these are in vain. I hope small events like this can grow to become something truly impactful.
The first thing that I will say is that I am incredibly grateful that the days of life being on Zoom are over. It is so much easier to connect with other people as humans when you meet in person. That being said, video conferencing is still a useful tool for situations in which it is not easy to bring people together in person. Recently, when I have had to take a video call I have always looked for a clean wall behind me. I want people not to be distracted by what is going on around me, and be able to focus on the topic at hand. While this article promoted the use of blurred backgrounds, I personally don’t like them. I feel that when someone has their background blurred, they feel a lot less personal and a lot more artificial. While I would agree that a clean office can be a good background for a professional call, a blank wall is a neutral option which is easier to find.
This was such a wonderful article to read. I love this! This is such an excellent return! One of the things that I dislike most about commercial broadway is how elite and unobtainable it has become for most people to see a broadway show. I feel like this is such an incredible improvement and is definitely a step in the right direction of making Broadway accessible again. I am also very glad to see some excellent shows on the list of shows participating. It is so nice to see quite a variety of shows! From the long running classics like The Lion King and Wicked, to the most widely known shows like Hamilton to some of the new ones that are supposed to be excellent like Days of Wine and Roses and Gutenberg! I am so happy to see that this could provide an opportunity to people that might not otherwise choose to see some of the smaller shows.
