The Fire This Time Festival at 15
New York Theater: The Black couple go overboard in congratulating their daughter for coming out, donning rainbow T-shirts and displaying a pride banner, but they learn to their shock that Niani is not coming out as queer, but as a Karen; that’s right, a white woman. Taylor Adam Blackman’s “It’s Karen, B***” is one of the half-dozen ten-minute plays, half of them queer-themed, in the fifteenth annual The Fire This Time Festival, which runs through January 28 at The Wild Project.

I was interested to learn about this festival, as I’ve previously not been aware of the work that it’s been doing. The “Fire This Time” festival seems to serve biting comedy, and in a style that I really love. I think that theatrical festivals are generally really good for communities and community building, and it’s really good to see a lot of shows in this festival focused on queer issues, with the recent waves of banning forms of self expression in some states. I enjoyed reading about the show “Ethel and Ethel” and I think it's helpful to have media that not only portrays the current state of being queer in the United States, but also the history, to both reinforce that queer people have always been here, and to normalize it to audiences who might not have any exposure to any forms of queer media. I’d personally love to go see the festival next year.
