I LOVE acceptance speeches. Of course there have been some terrible speeches delivered in the past but there are some that have stuck with me for years. One that comes to mind first is Andre De Shields 2019 Tony acceptance speech where he listed three cardinal rules which were “1. Surround yourself with people whose eyes light up when they see you coming. 2. Slowly is the fastest way to get to where you want to be. 3. The top of one mountain is the bottom of the next, so keep climbing”. I think acceptance speeches provide artists a really awesome platform to share what is important to them and inspire those watching. I think the speech discussed in this article is beautiful. I think my favorite part was when she thanked herself. I cannot say I have heard that often and I think more people should be doing it. While there are so many people supporting the winners they still did so much work to get where they are and I think it important and really beautiful to acknowledge that.
