5 Major Questions for The Theater in 2024 and Beyond
New York Theater: My questions about theater in 2024 are prompted by the major theater stories of 2023. The questions I have now mostly differ from the ones I had when I started these annual first-of-the-year posts about possible future trends in 2020 (which I began because I couldn’t pass up the pun: “Seeing 2020.”)

This was a very interesting article. I especially liked the question “How will Artificial Intelligence affect live theater?” I have recently been thinking about this alot and even did my final research paper on Artificial Intelligence and other machine learning programs and there interaction with theatrical design. I found that AI is currently being used in many different ways by different people in the theatre industry, some of my favorite uses are in live projection alteration and how the AI changes the projections based on the music that is being played by the piped in orchestra. I also love the thought of using AI to generate textual inspiration and for research. I hate the use of AI to generate fully fledged designs which it is capable of doing and while they are beautiful, they completely lack integrity. Overall, I think it is naive to think that AI won’t become integrated into theatre. I just hope that everyone uses it in a respectful, honest, and uncopyrighted way.
