KDKA Debuts New First Alert Weather Sphere
Pittsburgh Magazine: At 9:20 a.m. KDKA’s meteorologist Ron Smiley goes live on air forecasting warm weather and sunny skies this week in Pittsburgh.
Smiley holds a tablet where, with the press of a button, he is able to switch from a 3D map of Allegheny County to a view of Mount Washington, all from the comfort of the downtown studio. These visual aids are all thanks to KDKA’s new AR/VR technology.

When I first looked at this I thought it was just a large green screen and was confused how this was a new technology. But the technology they are playing with seems really interesting. The large number of cameras and ipads tracking movement should allow for some innovative storytelling. I do with the article went a little more into how they intend to use this. Starting with weather is a good baseline since we are used to weather reports being done with the use of greenscreen so adding AR/VR to these reports seems like the next step. As the article says it is just the beginning stages of experimenting with this and I’m interested to see what they do with it next for storytelling and other news segments using the new technology. The large green space will hopefully prove to be a great addition to their news broadcasting.
