Preview: Mandy Gonzalez Sings the Songs of Lin-Manuel Miranda With PSO Pops
onStage Pittsburgh: Mandy Gonzalez, the original Nina in the Tony Award-winning In the Heights, possesses a genre-defying voice that inspired Lin-Manuel Miranda to gush that she is “one of the greatest singers on earth.” She has played some of the most memorable characters in some of the most memorable Broadway productions of the 2000s — Elphaba in Wicked and Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard among them — but it is her collaborations with the creator of In the Heights and Hamilton that brings her to Heinz Hall for Everything I Know: Mandy Gonzalez Sings Lin-Manuel Miranda, October 8-11, 2026.

I think it’s interesting that she is questioning why Lin-Maunuel Miranda’s music isn’t as celebrated as other composers. I think the opposite. I think Miranda’s music is widely celebrated, and among my generation, much more well known than Andrew Loydd Weber and Stephan Sondheim, and I’m sure people were saying the same thing and comparing those folks to Rogers and Hammerstein back in the day. I cannot get over the fact that they are saying their mission is to expose people to this music as if he is this small and not well-known composer. I don’t think he needs the help at all. Like what is wrong with just saying “People love his music, so we’re doing it”. Also, the whole point of a pops orchestra is for live music to be more accessible and appealing to the general public – so I don’t feel like people are going to see this show to discover new music. That being said, I am being cranky and this show sounds awesome and I hope lots of people go out to see it.
