Since The Lost Boys is such a beloved movie for me, receiving this news that Dane Laffrey won the Hewes Scenic Award was probably my happiest moment during the entire week. The sheer scope of ambition of this production can currently be seen as unmatched on Broadway; they even made a three story-high set piece and had a sixty-five foot fly system installed. As soon as audiences got their eyes on the show, they loved it. It swept through all four categories for its design in the Theatre Fans Choice Awards hosted by BroadwayWorld back in June, winning eleven awards total. At the Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards, it swept favorite new musical as well. And so it was quite odd that the Hewes Committee would give it only one of these prizes despite nominations for lighting and sound design, as well as for notable effect for wigs, aerial work, and special effects.
