Intermission Magazine: The intercultural theatre company launched its new open-air stage at Cité-des-Hospitalières earlier this month. The former seat of the Religious Hospitallers of Saint Joseph, Cité-des-Hospitalières sits on Avenue des Pins at the northeastern foot of the iconic Mount Royal hill. The City of Montreal purchased the heritage complex in 2017 and converted it into a community space that currently hosts 33 non-profit organizations, including Teesri Duniya Theatre.

I think that the backyard theater festival is very exciting. I really enjoy outdoor theater, I think its a fun environment and a great way to make theater more widespread and accessible. Outdoor theater can have its risks like weather, and it often comes with an inability to do special effects with lighting or sound. However it also comes with a greater realism, and a greater ability for the audience to connect to the production. While it may not be as technically advanced, outdoor theater can be just as, if not more impactful than indoor proscenium theater, because it can feel more real. One of the coolest community theater productions I’ve seen was a performance of American Idiot, done in a carport in July 2020. Outdoor spaces were what we turned to when we needed art and community during COVID I also think it's really interesting that they are using the outdoor space to allow quicker turnaround times on new and relevant works. Theater can take time, and using stripped down and outdoor shows to make theater relevant to current events is really interesting, and the type of theater I hope to work on someday.
