This article highlights why so many theatres around the country are closing and it is incredible to see the Riverfront Theatre Company continue to grow instead. The cost of producing theatre is steeply climbing and many places can’t afford locations to put on their productions. It is great that RTC has managed to find a new venue they can use even if it is a little far from their established audience. Additionally the RTC’s commitment to growing a welcoming and inclusive learning environment to make theatre more accessible for community members. Dobronz highlights her experience as a kid in theatre as not exactly a supportive environment and I have witnessed the same in various theaters where I grew up. The fact the RTC is trying to change that and give kids a place to try new ideas and maybe make mistakes is very much needed. Additionally the idea of producing multigenerational shows where anyone in the community can join regardless of age is a great way to foster the intended environment and make theatre more accessible for people to both watch and be in.
