What Does Christopher Nolan Think About Film Criticism?
brobible.com: Christopher Nolan took a cutting shot at film criticism during his promotional tour for The Odyssey. According to Nolan, the belief that identifying a storytelling mechanism therefore invalidates it has become a “fundamental flaw” in modern criticism.

Tropes became tropes for a reason. All tropes originate as useful narrative devices that end up working for multiple stories. When tropes are used in a work of fiction they act as a form of shorthand for the audience to understand parts of the story without needing it to be spelled out. Like the example in the article of John Wick, the audience understands why John Wick is on a war path from the moment the dog dies without needing further explanation. Understanding the tropes that a film contains helps with film criticism but tropes alone do not make a film. The magic is in how tropes are combined and altered. Knowing that a bridge is primarily constructed of steel doesn't mean that the average person could build a stable bridge. But knowing what parts made something helps to break it down and create a better understanding of the whole. A writer is no more a fraud for using tropes in their writing than an engineer is for using steel to build a bridge.
