www.indiewire.com: We live in a world where pretty much anything can be rendered photorealistically, from animals to aliens to Avatars. That puts pressure on documentary filmmakers, especially those who focus on the natural world, to craft imagery that does more than look glossy or large-scale enough for a screensaver. Great nature docs use dynamic, idiosyncratic imagery to make us feel like we’re in nature rather than absorbing content.

As someone who loves animal documentaries I find the process so interesting. While it is impressive what editors can do with cgi in movies there is true beauty in seeing into the real lives of animals that are not influenced by a script. It really is a wonder to read through some of the processes that the film makers go through to make sure the depiction is as authentic as possible. I would have never thought the color grading that they add to it could influence the credibility of reality so much. It also makes me think of how important wildlife documentaries are for the film makers who end up animating or editing animals for movies. It reminds me of when Bambi was in production and they brought a doe into the studio so the animators could study her behavior. No matter if they’re using the best cgi, if they don’t know the behavioral patterns it can skew the depictions of these animals. Animal documentaries are also just so interesting and fun to watch. Instead of deciphering a costume, set piece, or sound quality I find myself immersed in the animals and the habitats–it turns my designer brain off and I actually get to enjoy the show and learn.
