www.broadwayworld.com: Truthmachine is not just a show about a lie detector test - every performance is also a real polygraph interrogation with a brave audience volunteer. Contemporary theatre often seeks out moments of radical truth and authenticity in order to connect with its audience. We want to see ourselves on stage; we want to manifest something real! Our theatre shares this ambition, but our approach is to outsource the truth to unrehearsed audience members.

This show was on my list to see but I was unable to squeeze it in there. It’s enlightening hearing more about behind the scenes of the production. Truth machines as we see them in the media do you seem to be the scales of truth. How interesting though that even a method for finding out the truth is inherently subjective. It’s simply a tool to gather biological information in which a person with their own biases judges what’s true or false. For the purposes of this production they translate that biological information into sounds for audience members to interpret as a collective what’s true or false. It gets me thinking: what things truly have a binary, true or false. In a world of Gray, what is truly that straightforward? Hard facts: when you were born, what color your eyes are, what time it is… But anything beyond that it’s hard to say any experience as colored by context.
