www.inverse.com: Na Hong-jin’s Hope made a splash at the Cannes Film Festival, with critics praising the sci-fi action thriller’s nonstop action sequences. The movie, about a rural police chief and his rookie deputy who must defend their village from a mysterious alien creature, does suffer from dodgy CGI, but lengthy, impressive chase scenes more than make up for it.

Although I knew that 4DX and other premium movie seating existed, I had no idea that the technology had been in use for seventeen years, or that its use was becoming more common. This commercial shift in movie theatres highlights how people's media consumption habits have changed; we used to go to the movies on a random afternoon to pass the time, but now streaming has made casual movie trips nearly obsolete. Any of us can find nearly any movie online, so movie theatres have to try much harder to get patrons in. Themed popcorn buckets and special seating experiences are the incentives it takes to pull us out of the comfort of our homes, but that comes at a cost. Movies are getting increasingly expensive, and while the new, more immersive experiences can make movies more fun, they also make them less accessible. In 2015, the average price of a movie ticket was less than $9.00. Today, tickets go for $15 on average and can reach nearly $30 for blockbusters. New movie theatre technology is incredible and can add so much to the moviegoers’ experience, but it also begs the question of where the line between accessibility and advancement lies.
I actually really love the 4dx format for movies, I think it’s a really fun way to experience a movie in a different way and the 4dx showings I have gone to have been really exciting and fun for me. I think it’s important for media to introduce new things once in a while to keep things interesting while I do think the standard way of showing movies is timeless it doesn’t hurt to try to innovate once in a while, I will agree that not every movie suits it though.I feel a similar way of tri screens in movie theatres specifically for Spider-Man brand new day, even if it doesn’t work out well the first time I’m glad that they tried it and can work on improving it in the future. A better example though is the sphere showing movies, even if the tickets are really expensive I’m glad there’s a place where people can experience movies in a completely different format and it actually looks really well thought out. I think there should be a lot more places that have immersive media, I would say it sticks with people a lot more
