How the War Changed the Way I Work with Teenagers in Theatre
HowlRound Theatre Commons: For more than ten years, I worked in Ukraine’s extracurricular arts education system. Unlike in the United States, where art education is often integrated into schools, Ukraine has a separate network of public educational institutions under the Ministry of Education and Science that provides art education after the regular school day. I worked at the largest extracurricular arts center in Dnipro, one of Ukraine’s longest-established institutions of its kind, with a history spanning nearly ninety years.

For me theatre has always been about community. About the community in which the play is being produced. And about the community that forms within the cast and crew. I'm glad that projects like this are still running despite adjustments needing to be made. For me the most impactful section of the article was the portion about merging the age groups and the unspoken collaboration that it took to make that work. Everyone coming together and offering support not criticism. Putting on a show is a massive undertaking and requires a great amount of time and effort even in peace times. Another part of the article that stood out to me was how the repertoire of the group changed over time. How the students at first chose an exaggerated and ironic show but over time felt ready to stage The Diary of Anne Frank. Ultimately theatre is all about portraying concepts on stage to better understand them and come to terms with them in real life.
