The case for a consistent remote and distributed I/O platform with Dinkle International

Control Design: Implementing a reliable input/output (I/O) architecture is fundamental for any type of monitoring and control system. An increasing demand for Internet of Things (IoT) data gathering and sophisticated automation is prompting designers to find more effective I/O for connecting with sensors, motor controls and actuators.

This article shows many of the strengths of modern networking hardware (though it feels weird referring to a standard older than me as modern). Ethernet and protocols like it take routing from the physical level to a logical level. Essentially ethernet allows all machines in a network to communicate without each machine needing a direct link to one another like in previous protocols. While ethernet has been used in computers for decades it seems that the industrial sector has not fully adopted the standard yet. Of course in theatre we're no strangers to carrying signals through ethernet with standards like sACN for lighting and Dante for sound. This article is the first I've heard of devices including a passthrough ethernet port to allow for daisy chaining equipment. Overall I'm not surprised that the industrial sector has taken more time than others to adopt this new technology. In anything involving safety it's important that every component is thoroughly tested.
