I do not want to be the production following Cats: The Jellicle Ball. When you redefine a show this radically it seems hard to call any new production that isn’t this radically different a “reimagining”. In an industry so intertwined with capitalism, how rare is it to find a show that feels this new and original. Don’t get me wrong. It was still a huge money maker, which allowed it to be so successful, but I imagine it was also a tremendous risk at the beginning. We as an industry need to empower visionary storytellers, who are taking those risks to obliterate the box. And this is all within the context of a revival of a musical that’s been around for over 50 years. Imagine how much more innovation is happening in new works. I wonder if there could be a way to create more incubators for new ideas, like the center of new work, across LORT. A vehicle for workshopping new work to then showcase to Regional Theatres to be picked up for a production.
