Dr. Dre on AI in Music: Here’s What He Thinks
www.billboard.com: In an interview with The New York Times alongside his longtime business partner Jimmy Iovine, the legendary rapper and producer called AI a “new tool for creativity” and said he doesn’t see it “as a threat.”
Ai infesting the music space is just as bad as it is in ‘traditional’ art. I find it really disheartening that a producer as big as Dr Dre would endorse it. I think his argument that drum machines and synthesisers went through the same stigma is flat. While true that people were skeptical about it, people were still using it to make their own ideas. Dr Dre doesn’t see ai as a threat and I really think he should–while he might not see the issues now, I think he will definitely see them in the future. “Songwriters” no longer pour themselves into a song if they’re using ai to make their lyrics; it takes the soul out of the music. Not to mention with how fast ai is developing, there might be a music future where an ‘artist’ no longer has to lift a finger when it comes to making it. Replicating voices is an issue that many are bringing up in general conversations about ai, with this being infused into genuine song making a musician might not know what people are using their voices to create. And that's just the start. This can then develop into a full ai-music industry where humans are no longer present.
My big issue with AI infiltrating the entertainment world is that it is taking away a lot of opportunities from real people who have the talent to do the exact same thing that AI is doing and maybe even doing it better than AI. When people start to rely on AI for doing things, they lose those skills. AI should have been a very helpful resource, but people are using it for all the wrong things. The fact that AI “can” do all of these creative things, does not mean that it should. Especially because of the environmental destruction that it is doing just by being used. There are plenty of artists who can do what AI is doing and people are losing the connection of collaboration by using AI. Again, AI should have been helpful, but the way that society has started to use it is making people lose the part of art that makes it art, connection.
It’s interesting to see this opinion even if I do not agree with it. While I think any opinion is valid saying that you don’t see any downside at all for ai in music is crazy. I feel like they have the liberty to say this because they have already made it as musicians and don’t need to worry about getting success in the modern ai age so they don’t see the consequences for upcoming musicians, ai music will make it harder for newer artists to get out there and gain for fans if there are more artists in the space and if ai artists use ai to make their music they don’t need to strain as hard and can make more music with not as much effort which isn’t fair to musicians who actually practice their craft. Also ai is not like the tools that came out in the past people weren’t making entire songs with multiple instruments on the drum machine with the tap of their finger it’s entirely different since their is only a little human input
