A quick overview of three CAD modeling techniques
www.thefabricator.com: Mainstream 3D CAD offers many alternative modeling techniques that can be combined to arrive at about the same ending point. The “best” modeling technique is a moving target, but completing the model without delay is a bonus. Opportunity cost (time to completion) always should be minimized.

Modeling is all about taking what you know and finding what you want to know. From this article it seems like using a revolve is best for when you already know what the cross section should look like either through previous drafting or due to known design constraints. You simply model the cross section in 2d space and revolve it to form the 3d shape. But from my understanding boss extrudes and surface modeling allow you to think through modeling either in terms of multiple shapes put together or the surfaces of one shape. While the ability to label parts of the shape and edit the shape without needing to switch between 2d and 3d seem appealing I think that as someone who has done more hand drafting than CAD drafting the revolve method makes more sense to me. At least for the example in the article working in 3d doesn't look like it would convey much information that you would not already see in the cross section so I would imagine that working in 2d would be simpler though I could see the techniques in the article being helpful for more complex models.
