Robert Juliat Dalis 862 footlights take to the dance floor

LightSoundJournal.com: On 12 November in Paris, 163 Robert Juliat Dalis 862 footlights took part in the unique Chiroptera show, a collaborative project by JR, Damien Jalet and Thomas Bangalter. The public gathered at the Place de l’Opéra watched an impressive 20-minute ballet in front of the façade of the Palais Garnier, which was dressed in a huge trompe-l’œil fresco revealing the entrance to a cave, that masked the scaffolding currently covering the façade of the building as it is being restored.

I think that this show using footlights as its primary fixture represents an interesting shift in the overall way people are using lights. Historically Ellipsoidals are the workhorse fixtures, with some fresnels and par cans. In that environment, the primary purpose of striplights was just to light cycs, and maybe to be used as footlights. Most moving lights target achieving one of those purposes. Now, it seems like there is a big push towards lights with multiple emitters in order to create very interesting effects. That includes footlights, linear fixtures, pixel tape, and even the individual emitters on many wash lights. Over the break, I got to see Sweeeney Tod, and in that show, Natasha Katz used a line of striplights hung midstage to tremendous effect through the show, most notably to give the effect of sunlight filtering through a building in Act 1 and using the striplight with heavy haze as a main curtain during intermission.
