Majors and Minors That Enrich a Dance Degree

Dance Magazine: For dancers who spent every spare moment of their childhoods camped out at the studio but also took their academic studies seriously, what comes after high school might feel like an either/or proposition: To dance or not to dance? Should you make a beeline for conservatory or company auditions, or dive full-throttle into collegiate academics?

It is interesting that this article proposes that there are certain things that will make your degree more or less valuable. They talk about the conservatory bubble where, and something I’m sure most students in CMU SoD can relate to, you feel like this one thing you’re doing is your entire life and it consumes your entire identity. Many of us pursue this style of Postsecondary Education because it offers us the opportunity to dive fully into the thing we are pursuing as not only a passion but a lively hood. With that said, it is hard to feel like you are trapped and I think many students end up that way regardless of it being their choice. This is why tackling things outside of Drama is so integral to becoming a well rounded adult. And I think that is what this article is trying to get at– you can be good at something without letting it consume you.
