The arts have often been exclusive events, not because of the content or location, but mostly because of price. It costs a lot to put on a live show, and with fewer large donors in the arts, ticket sales are important to keeping doors open. Unfortunately, this means theater often excludes individuals who simply can’t afford to spend their money on tickets. It is so nice to see a theater really attempting to broaden their audience demographic. The story, being focused on a Filipino story, will likely resonate with Filipino immigrants and Filipino-Americans who have family who lived through the very story being portrayed on stage. Unfortunately (again), immigrants in America have a higher chance of having a smaller disposable income, which means the very demographic that would relate to this show most would be excluded. It is exciting to see the producers partnering with Gold House and The Asian American Foundation in an effort to reach audiences that may not have had the chance otherwise.
