Full Sail University cuts 180 positions amid 'organizational realignment
FOX 35 Orlando: Full Sail University has eliminated 180 positions across its campus as part of what officials call an "organizational realignment."
In a statement, the school said the cuts affect multiple areas, including academic, administrative and operational.
Though this article is extremely short, I actually find this very interesting. I remember briefly looking at Full Sail University during my college search before realizing they were a for-profit institution. I believe that this is the critical point of information to look at when understanding this situation. A for-profit institution's overall purpose is not to educate people, conduct research or better society, it is to make money for its shareholders. If certain positions are not generating an obvious profit, they have nothing stopping them from eliminating it. So while I do sympathize with those affected by layoffs, I feel that this is something that one must accept the risk of when employed by a for-profit university. I also believe that these significant layoffs indicate a lack of financial stability for Full Sail University, something I find unsurprising as many, much more reputable, colleges are also struggling in the current economy.
