1776 Hair Plan-Related Lawsuit to Continue
BroadwayWorld: It has been over two-and-a-half years since Zuri Washington sued the 1776 tour producers for racial discrimination and retaliation, and finally a court has addressed the substance of her allegations. After a venue change and the filing of two amended complaints, a judge for the United States District Court for the District of Maryland dismissed Washington's claims for discrimination but allowed her claims for retaliation to continue.

I had never heard of this court case prior to reading this article, and I thought this was an interesting example of artists speaking how they feel about management companies. Something that I really enjoyed about this article was how it laid out all of the court terminology. I have found that a lot of articles talking about court cases sort of just say results, but not necessarily explain those results or what it means. This article explained the meaning of the court’s call to dismiss some of the claims but not others, and what that means for everyone involved in the case. It definitely sounds like this situation is not great, so it seems good that there is still a court case that is being allowed to happen, even though some of the claims were dismissed. As the article mentioned, these cases seem to be happening repeatedly and sometimes dismissed similarly, so hopefully these cases cause shifts in the industry to prevent discrimination and retaliation in the future.
