When I think Opera, I do not think of A River Runs Through it. That being said, I also don't think of new works being produced. It's a bias I think a lot of people probably share. Opera to me is a canonical form of production where everything is Italian, French, or German, it's got to be at least a hundred years old, and there’s always some sort of weird relationship going on. For example, The Marriage of Figaro; it's Italian, it's old, and there's that part of the plot where his mom kinda wants to get with him. Or, take Die Walkure; it’s German, also old, and focuses on the incestual relationship between two siblings. All this to say, if it's not in a Looney Tunes episode I probably wouldn't associate it with Opera. However, it is interesting seeing the proof that Opera continues to be a living form of theatre. It does not just encompass old stories, or stay within the confines of tradition. Logically, I knew this, but yet reading that they were turning A River Runs Through It, into an Opera really surprised me as it clashed so heavily with the expectation I had of Opera.
