Elton John Gets an EGOT With 2023 Emmys Win

The Hollywood Reporter: Elton John is the latest member of the EGOT club, scoring his first Emmy for best variety special (live). The 2023 Emmy Awards win for the musician’s Farewell From Dodger Stadium special, which he secured during Monday night’s telecast, joins his Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards.

I was so happy that Elton John got his EGOT! I had gone to bed by the time he actually won the EGOT so I didn’t get to see it live. I only found out after reading this article that he wasn’t even present to receive his award. That must sting. He was recovering from a surgery which made it even worse. I feel like I would rather miss my EGOT because I was doing something fun with my family, not because I was recovering from surgery. I of course am not Elton John and I am not getting an EGOT so it doesn't really matter what I would prefer. I didn’t know that only 19 people had ever won an EGOT. I guess it makes sense, it’s an amazing honor to win any one of those awards but for whatever reason I thought more people had won EGOTS. The article also had a list of people who had gotten an EGOT and there were so many people on that list who I didn’t know had EGOTs.

It’s so awesome that Elton John got an EGOT! That is such an impressive feat, and he definitely deserves it. When I watched ‘Rocketman’ a while back, I felt I was reintroduced to the greatness that is his music, while also getting to learn more about him and his journey. I was reminded recently of how prevalent listening to him was in my childhood actually, I realized how one of the most nostalgic Christmas songs for me is his “Step into Christmas” song that used to play on this CD that we used to play around the holidays in my family. As well as that, every time I listen to his song “Crocodile Rock” it’s like one of those sensory switches where I get a rush of feeling/thinking about when I was a child living in San Francisco (I moved away when I was five, but those memories especially visually are still vibrant for me, especially when I play that song for some reason).

If I'm being honest, I think Elton John getting his EGOT is such a wonderful sendoff, especially with the special that won him his Emmy being about his final concert of his career. Elton John has been such a large figure in the cultural landscape since the 70s that I think he very rightly so deserves the EGOT. Conversely, his last tour, the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour had become the highest grossing concert tour of all time, until surpassed by Taylor Swift. The fact that John is joining the ranks of some of my favorite creatives such as Rita Moreno, Mel Brooks, Tim Rice, and Alan Menken makes me so happy. (I wish Howard Ashman could join the list, he could if he ever gets a posthumous special Tony but that's unlikely so whatever)

I was watching all of the awards shows that happened over the last couple of weeks: Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, and the Emmy Awards. I was mostly paying attention to the films and television shows that I loved such as Oppenheimer, Barbie, The Bear, Succession, and Beef. While all of these shows got the awards and recognition they deserved, one of the best moments out of all of the award shows was when Elton John’s name got announced for best variety special (live) with his Farewell From Dodger Stadium special. I do wish he could’ve been at the award show to accept the award but all of us watching were so happy anyway because he deserved it so much. This was such a fantastic and well-deserved way to end his astonishing career and he is a great addition to the short list of people who have the EGOT status.
