I can’t believe how long it has taken for an Asian woman to win an Emmy for a lead role. That is really upsetting, especially since Asian women have been nominated. Ali Wong definitely deserved this win for her performance in Beef. She did an incredible job at making her character seem very real with the depths and complexities of emotions she portrayed. I do wish that this wasn’t such a monumental win for Asian women and that this win didn’t have to set that precedent. Asian women should have already won this Emmy several times before. There needs to be more diversity in these awards ceremonies in Hollywood, and it is really frustrating to see how long it is taking for it to occur. I do not know what needs to be done to change this. I wonder what other initiatives we need to implement to make a more dramatic change in Hollywood. I wish it was a simple answer, but I’m afraid it is not so black and white. These kinds of situations are complicated, but I hope over the next couple of years we can see more and more diversity in Hollywood.

I did not watch the Emmys because I never know when these award shows are happening until the day after they air, but it was so exciting for me to hear that Ali Wong had become the first Asian woman to win an Emmy for a lead role. Even though I am not a Shin, I did cry while reading this article, because as a woman of color, it is still so inspirational, and so powerful to see our people finally being recognized for the work that we do. With all the hate and tragedies in this world, it is really important for diverse stories to be told to the media, because this really does shape people's perspectives on people who are different from them. Oftentimes people of color are very tokenized in mainstream media and only portray sometimes harmful stereotypes so I think it’s really incredible that Ali Wong had the opportunity to represent her culture in a meaningful way. She is truly a trailblazer for younger generations to come.

I didn’t know that an Asian person had never won an Emmy before, but it doesn’t surprise me, that Asians are extremely underrepresented in Western culture, or moreover, misrepresented. Ali Wong makes a huge impact on Asian Americans. As a young half-Asian girl growing up in America, all I ever saw on Television was a stereotypical presentation of an Asian person of most likely a different ethnic group than intended. It was discouraging, to say the least, I never could aspire to be like someone I saw on TV, I looked for signs of commonality and came to nothing. Wong is something that I aspire to be in a way, I know that this is just the start of Asians in popular Western media and entertainment. As I grow as an artist I hope to join Wong in the forefront of women taking over this industry, not in acting but on the creative side.

I want to preface this comment by saying that I absolutely LOVE ALI WONG. She is absolutely amazing and brilliant and ugh I LOVE her. Ali Wong is just so creative in everything she does and she is an incredible actress. Personally I would say one of my favorite roles she's played would be Ali in the Netflix Original show, Big Mouth. I am so so so happy that she is finally getting all the recognition she deserves by receiving this Emmy Award. I am yet to watch Beef, which is the show she was on and the reason she won an Emmy for “best actress in a limited series.” The only thing is that I am upset to learn that she was the FIRST Asian woman to win this award in this category. I just think it’s been a LONG time coming for an Asian woman to win “best actress in a limited series,” and we should work towards getting other POC actors and creators the recognition they deserve.

I had the privilege of watching "Beef" last year, and Ali Wong's remarkable performance continues to inspire me to this day. "Beef" is deeply rooted in Asian culture, and it was truly gratifying to see an Asian lead character win an Emmy for such a meaningful storyline. As an Asian viewer, the narrative resonated with me on a personal level. Much like Ali Wong's approach, rather than dwelling solely on the stereotypes associated with our culture, embracing, and learning from the richness of our heritage can lead to personal growth. To be more specific, Asian actors often encounter challenges related to their ethnicity, but these experiences can be transformed into personal treasures that are uniquely valuable. The plot's storyline, along with the diverse and compelling acting styles in various scenarios, present opportunities to leverage our experiences and reinterpret them creatively through storytelling. This approach allows us to share our narratives in innovative and transformative ways.
