STAR TREK: PICARD Makeup Master James MacKinnon on Creating Aliens for Season 3
Nerdist: Makeup artist James MacKinnon has been a part of the Star TrekOpens in new tab family since the early ’90s. In recent years, he’s served as makeup department head on Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Short Treks, and all three seasons of Star Trek: Picard. I’ve been watching the progression of what is High Definition. For a long time, 720p was a big deal and it was the standard for what is High Definition. Soon 1080p became the higher definition option and then 4k came out which was deemed extravagant and only for really fancy things. Eventually, 720p stopped being considered High Definition at all, 1080 is barely considered High Definition now, and 4k is in everyday people’s homes with 8k in many too. I had never honestly thought about how it makes it so all the details have to be more realistic otherwise it looks worse. It’s really fascinating how the increase in device quality means a requirement for more intriquite work and higher detailed makeup, costumes, props, scenery, everything. And on top of the device quality, people are scrutinizing little mistakes more and more as the everyday person is now much more likely to notice if something doesn’t look quite right.
