Shakespeare Everywhere — but not a doublet in sight

The Washington Post: Misery may acquaint a man with strange bedfellows, as William Shakespeare wrote. But if a new festival celebrating the work of the Bard is any indication, a happy coincidence can be just as effective at uniting disparate entities.

As someone who loves Shakespeare, interdisciplinary work, and political activism, this festival and all that they are doing sounds like a dream. I am a big fan of the language of Shakespeare the work that he completed during his lifetime and his creativity when it comes to language is truly admirable. I am also fascinated by how lots of his stories have become set ideas within storytelling, such as the star-crossed lovers and the paranoid leader. I enjoy watching Shakespeare to see how each performance manipulates the original script creating something completely new. However, Shakespeare does have his shortcomings, particularly in writing women, and people in other marginalized communities. Hearing about how they are using characters like Lady Macbeth to create a musical mash-up to highlight the experience of black women in society, brings me so much joy. It reminds me that creativity is endless and that you can love classics and use them to create something contemporary.
