Rust Prosecutors Look Into Whether Alec Baldwin Undermined Set Safety

The Hollywood Reporter: In what could be a prelude to the refiling of charges against the movie’s actor and producer, prosecutors are seeking documents between Rust Movie Productions and Alec Baldwin, as well as his production company El Dorado Pictures. They’re looking into the possibility that Baldwin stood to profit if he cut corners on set safety related to the use of guns.

This article honestly made me upset. I hate when I have to read stuff like this because it should not be happening and now the media is all involved. I have always been someone who struggles working on or seeing shows with weapons. I don't know why but I have always been sensitive to them. I think part of that is situations like these. It is easy to get really comfortable or relaxed with a prop weapon because it seems harmless. But then things like this happen and then we have to figure out who to blame. And based off this article figuring that out gets really messy. I think maybe it is easier to blame the crew but in my opinion part of the fault also lies on the actor for getting too relaxed and not doing his job to keep his coworkers safe. The blame for an event like this goes to multiple people, but really I think we should be taking steps to prevent situations like this in the future.

This whole story is quite upsetting, and the rollercoaster of the media reporting has been wild. From the beginning where people were wholeheartedly blaming Guttierez-Reed and saying that it was a ploy or something along those lines, to now where it seems like Guttierez-Reed was spread too thin and not given adequate resources. To me it does read as willful ignorance on the side of the producers but that is just speculation. There are so many variables to what happened, that we can never really know what truly happened. All in all, its a tragedy that any of this happened. However, it does show people how productions companies who want to save a little money can fuck everyone over. The importance of weapon safety cannot be understated. You must always treat a gun like it is a live weapon. There is nothing more important than that.

This is certainly not the first case where cutting financial corners led to a deadly accident. I was under the impression that if the weapons specialist on the set of Rust had done her job accordingly, there would not have been this devastating tragedy. It seems now that she was trying to do her job correctly. I remember when the news of this fatal shooting was first released and how many different opinions there were as to why this tragedy occurred which seemed to vary by profession. The article that made the situation clear to me was an interview with an expert weapons specialist who explained the primary party responsible was the weapons specialist on set. In the interview, the expert talked about how he is the only person who handles the weapons up to the point the weapon is handed to an actor. He ensures each piece is stored and locked appropriately and always unloaded. The entire time I was reading this article I had the song “We Both Reached for the Gun” from Chicago playing in my head.
