Part of Central Park Will Be Closed Due to Concert Damage

consequence.net: Central Park’s Great Lawn has been closed by officials due to damages caused by concert-goers last month at Global Citizen Festival. According to the Central Park Conservancy, the beloved section of the park won’t be open again until April 2024, after repairs can be made.

This article brings up the idea of how much of an impact our industry can have on its environment. Theater involves using heavy machinery and moving heavy objects in places that are not necessarily designed to do so. More importantly, it involves moving a huge number of people into, around, and out of a space. I think back to the old saying not to call fire in a theater. Filling a space with hundreds or thousands or even tens of thousands of people has real impacts. If those people are walking on surfaces not destined for that amount of wear they can cause erosion. There is an incredible amount of food and water needed to sustain those people. The people need to be able to find parking and transportation to the venue. Finally, people need to have a place to use the bathroom. None of these challenges are insurmountable, but they do need to be carefully considered when a project is being planned, to ensure that no damage is caused like was in central park.

Good. Lord. That is absolutely ridiculous. Although the damages are not entirely the concert’s fault as there was an unprecedented amount of rain at the same time and muddy ground will get ripped up easier than dry ground. However, I will say that this is not an excuse for the ridiculous amount of damage that was caused by both the equipment and the large amount of attendees. It does make me wonder however, there have been many, many outdoor concerts in parks and I am almost certain that not all of them have caused this amount of damage. So I wonder why this particular concert destroyed so much of the ground. I think that we should invest a lot more in outdoor equipment that is designed for these types of circumstances. This would cost slightly more as they have to be safe in the elements but still I feel like it would be worth the investment.
