UCLA Theatrical Diversity Report 2023

nofilmschool.com: After last year's box office bonanza, it's fun to look at the report and see how movies like Barbie, John Wick 4, and Scream used diverse casts to their advantage. And how they were able to draw additional audiences with those casting choices as well.

A quote that stood out and heavily resonated to me is simple, but it’s a statement that isn't happening even today. The quote is: “Women should get those opportunities in front of and behind the camera.” I cannot agree with this statement MORE. I personally do think that the amount of women working in front of the camera vs behind is more. But, there can always be more women in the theater and film industry. More specifically, I would LOVE to see more POC/BIPOC cis, trangender women, femme and gender-nonconforming persons behind the camera! And it is definitely because I am a DP, so I have some bias when it comes to designing/managing vs. acting. I feel like I also see a limited number of south asian representation when it comes to off camera work, especially in the States. Another thing I really want to research is South Indian intimacy coordinators. I feel like that is so important and I want to read more about them.

I didn’t know UCLA did a diversity report and now I’m happy I do. It was really interesting to read. If I have the time I would like to go back and read their old reports as well. This article did a good job at breaking down some of the issues within Hollywood in regards to diversity. There’s still a lack of female directors in the top 300 films and the lack of female directors receiving a large budget. One thing this article pointed out which was really interesting is that women and people of color tend to drive box office sales and yet they are the people that are the least represented in the industry. There was honestly more disability representation than I expected. I can’t remember seeing any disabled people in movies that came out this last year. 3 of the top 20 films had disabled actors. I suppose disabled actors don’t have to play disabled characters and thus I wouldn’t know. However that number is higher than I thought and that is generally good news.
