Hollywood chooses a new young woman to hate every five years. While this article highlighted Anne Hathaway, the same phenomenon has happened to Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, and Katherine Heigl. Yes, there are unequivocally greater issues in the world than wealthy conventionally beautiful women being slammed in the tabloids, however, this control is just another way the patriarchy controls the entertainment industry. It furthers the narrative of “the diva”, women being painted as difficult, and young actresses having no autonomy in TV and film outside the male gaze. This is something I’m hoping to research further with my gender studies, but I do get quite heated about it. I’m glad Anne Hathaway can speak out about this now and that Christopher Nolan gave her the chance, however, the hero persona given to Nolan over Interstellar furthers the “damsel in distress” gaze in media. While I doubt this was intentional, and perhaps I’m analyzing this too far, there are further conversations about sexuality, gender, and power here.

I think that people forget how much their words and actions can affect people even if it is online. The harassment and the bullying that happens to so many people online is crazy. The way that women in the entertainment industry can get harassed and lose their image because of what people say online is WILD. I think of the most influential women that I have grown up looking up to is an unrealistic standard that normal people are not being held to. For example, I have been a Taylor Swift fan for most of my life and the hate that she has received for simply making the music that she makes is out of this world but at the same time he has grown such a huge following for that same reason. The simple contradiction of becoming this icon for the music that you make but also getting hate for it just leaves someone in a conundrum.
