Cirque du Soleil Hawaii debut blends tradition and wonder
attractionsmagazine.com: Under the leadership of co-creator and Director Neil Dorward (The Illusionists, Circus 1903) and Simon Painter (The Works Entertainment), the creative team features Cirque du Soleil directors and designers and Native Hawaiian artists who are working together to “weave a tapestry of Indigenous stories together with the world-class, captivating entertainment that is Cirque du Soleil.”

Two reasons I clicked on this article, the first being after I saw Ka I will almost always click on a Cirque de Soleil article on the page. The second is that I could not exactly imagine why one would put something like this in Hawaii. After thinking about it for a little bit though it makes sense. Hawaii is one of the top United States tourist destinations and I can see why a company and or investors would want to put a massively profitable show somewhere near all that tourism on the islands. I'm not entirely sure how I would feel about such a commercial type of entertainment being put into the space, it sort of seems out of place as well as probably has some negative effects on the gentrification of the place. The article does state however that native Hawain creatives are guiding the artistry and vision of the will-be production. What exactly that means I do not know, but I hope it's not just for the benefit of a commercial business and that they are taking the time to highlight local artists' cultures and talents.
I think that this is a very important topic that I am glad is being talked about because I think that if people are going to put in a permanent residency for cirque in Hawai’i it should be cognisant of the culture of the people that are native to it. I think that having another permanent residency is really a huge stepping stone for cirque because of the opportunities that are now available to the people in this industry. I think that Hawai’i has a huge tourist attraction and using that information the cirque will have more people interested in what they are all about. The international company has such a huge name to it and giving them another platform to showcase amazing artists is just inspiring. I think that the stories that are going to be shown at this cirque is important that Hawai’i natives were a part of the process and the showcasing of it as well.
