The Carnegie Music Hall is Restored to its Former Glory

Pittsburgh Magazine: There are 1,530 new, custom-designed seats. Aisles have been resloped and widened. Nearly 1,180 fleur de lis stencils have been reapplied. Decorative gold-leaf panels have been replastered, repainted and cleaned. And perhaps the most welcome improvement of all – there’s now air-conditioning.

This theatre is absolutely beautiful. I love smaller tiered theatres. They feel intimate yet grand, which I think is such a fun space to work in as well as visit. I absolutely love the red carpet floors, it gives the space a sense of luxury as well as connecting it to old hollywood roots. The white and gold accents with the red seats also give the space that sense of grandeur. I am glad this renovation project was taken now as all people deserve to be able to sit comfortably in this gorgeous theatre. I found it so interesting how they made custom size seats, and how wider seats aren't widely acceptable. I really hope to be able to work in this theatre in some capacity over the next three years. I am also happy to hear that in addition to the physical space, tech also got an update in this beautiful theatre.

I quite enjoy going to classical music stuff in Pittsburgh and I am really excited for this space to be in use again. It seems to be a more intimate space than the Benedum and what I assume is better acoustics and lighting than the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial, which is just a box with no orchestra shell. I also hope that the University does more concerts here as the walk is a bit better than Soldiers and Sailors. It's also quite nice to see that this space is being kept usable for a modern audiences, especially with how much history is in this building. Looking at the photos for the renovation, everything looks quite pretty, it also heavily reminds me of one of the theatres where I live, Thalian Hall, which is one of the oldest theatres in North Carolina. It definitely is done in the same style.
