‘Our destroyed theatre’s heart still beats’: Mariupol’s actors return to the stage, two years on

Ukraine | The Guardian: When the bombs hit the Mariupol Drama theatre, Vira Lebedynska did not hear a boom or a blast. From the recording studio in the theatre’s basement, where she was sheltering along with a few other theatre employees, the sensation was more like a vacuum.

As a Ukrainian-American theatremaker, this article made me sad, angry, raw, and somehow hopeful at the same time. 1000 people sheltered in the basement of a theatre, and yet so much of the world seems to have moved on; The Donetsk region of Ukraine is still Russian-occupied. There are nuanced politics underlying that I won’t try to confront in a 150-word newsquiz comment, but yeah I’m angry. 150 of the Mariupol employees now work for the Russian theatre in the Donetsk region. It’s foolish to be angry at those who have quite literally been bombed, however, hearing how their newest piece covers illness and death and mocks a Ukrainian accent of Russian as stupid makes me livid. I guess I’m just not sure how 150 people could stand for that. I wish I could see the piece premiering Uzhhorod. It seems like theatre I’m drawn to - confronting atrocities through documentary. Wow, I could read this article five more times and continue to pick it apart.
