I don't know what the laws in New York are, but I'm from North Carolina, where at-will employment would basically render this entire complaint moot. Am I using this tangentially related article to talk about something I deeply despise, maybe. The fact that in NC, and other states, you can be fired for any reason at any time may sound reasonable, it can lead to situations where, take for example, a teacher being suspended and almost fired for having students take an optional political alignment test that ask questions such as a student's stance on gay marriage and abortion. This isn't a hypothetical, this happened to a teacher at my High School, he was only reinstated after a public petition that was signed by over 4,000 community members, was sent to the board, use this link to see more. I remember talking to some of the other teachers around this time, and they were afraid to speak out on behalf of Pearsall for fear of losing there jobs. Not to mention the fact that you could easily be fired for Union involvement with the county providing some random other reason doesn't help.
