Watching the 2024 Oscars ceremony has always been a fun annual experience for myself and my friends. This year, I had a few people over, one of whom was actually a costume designer. When the John Cena bit happened, we all gasped. First off, he was shredded. Secondly, this was a really exciting and ironic way to announce the costume design award, of all things. After all letting out a good chuckle, it really set in just how important costuming is, and how much of an effect a bit like that had on the room. The Costume Designer’s guild slogan “You’re Naked Without Us!” really proved itself in that moment, and was a statement for the nation to remember. It was very interesting reading about what was used to create the naked look without him actually being naked.

I unfortunately did not have the access to watch the Oscars live, so the first image in this article was quite shocking for me to see. I had no idea that they would even let any actor be so nude on stage on live TV. It is quite impressive to learn about all of the thought and work that went into planning out this scene. I would not normally think about all of the costume material that would go into a nude look like this. There are many different options of protection for actors in intimate scenes on film that the costume designer had to sift through and choose the best ones for Cena in this moment. I also love the fact that they used this moment to promote something so important and bring the audience’s attention to the work that costume designers have had to go through in this industry to gain respect. I am so glad that this article explains the great inequality many costume designers face and what they have had to fight for.
