Diversity of Television Academy Increased by Almost 4% in 2023

www.thewrap.com: The study, which was conducted in partnership with ReadySet, found that over the past two years the percentage of Academy members who identify as a member of a historically marginalized racial or ethnic group has increased. Members who filled out the survey also reported a greater sense of belonging, especially among women who belonged to historically marginalized racial and ethnic groups. These members, who reported the lowest sense of belonging scores in 2021, reported a 10% increase in that sentiment.

I'm really glad the Television Academy has made some progress in terms of diversity, but I think that the data in this article is partially misrepresented. The "92%" approval of how much DEI has improved in the last year could just be due to those in the Academy who are not a member of a marginalized group. I would really like to see some more thorough statistical breakdowns, and promises of actual change that will happen from the Academy. Further on in the article, it also mentions how some marginalized groups don't feel that they are being adequately represented, and I think that we need to focus on the most egregious things first before we start worrying about the final details. There are a lot of things messed up with Hollywood right now, and Hollywood executives patting themselves on the back for how inclusive they are is not necessarily what we need. Actual change is what we need.

I'm not entirely sure what the television Academy is, as I am not super involved with pop culture innocence of the media. However, hearing that they're diversity is increasing is good. reading this article I got a slight just of what the television Academy was, and I can see how they have had issues with diversity before. Well they're diversity does seem to be increasing, 4% is not that large of a number. slow and steady sometimes when the race I suppose, but with something as integral as diversity I feel as though you might want to move in larger increments than that. Also the survey that people took about diversity including how they felt like they didn't belong, shows that your diversity increasing doesn't always mean you're fixing the problem. I think this television Academy needs to keep working in the right direction until they achieve a diverse and safe space for all.

Out of all the headlines that I see on this page, it can often be negative, and depressing. And while four percent is not much, it is something and something is progress. It's also good to hear that women in these spaces (women of historically marginalized races) feel a deeper sense of belonging. A ten percent increase is not only statistically significant but good to see and hear. I know that the article talks a lot about how in general these groups overall still report a lower sense of comfort and belonging than other less historically marginalized coworkers. But at the end of the day, I think I can acknowledge the fact that 92% of survey respondents reported an increase in diversity, equity, and inclusion in the television industry. I think it is a good thing that the academy is conducting these reports and I think it is a good sign to see these increases even though it seems to be moving slowly. Hopefully, these surveys will be able to move the industry forward in the direction of progress.
